              Zane/Rae, hi

What are the main differences between Vedic astrology and western astrology. I noted that Rae , you mentioned that your ascendant in western astrology is capricorn, yet Sagittarius in vedic.Interestingly a womena, whom I teach english to(she's Sri Lankan) is Aries in the west yet Scorpio in Vedic astrology.

Does this mean that your character /reading doesn't correspond accurately to those signs?

Western Astrology is also called Tropical Astrology. It uses a system of twelve signs which are tied in to the seasons. First day of Aries = first day of Spring, for example, first day of Cancer is the first day of Summer. Centuries ago, the solstices and equinoxes lined up with the start of the constellations, and so the signs and constellations were one and the same. Over time, though, the two have shifted almost one sign apart.

Vedic or Sidereal Astrology uses the constellations, not the signs.
So the first day of a solstice or equinox does not coincide with the beginning of any particular sign.

The difference is in perspective. But if you have your ascendant in one sign in Western astrology, it will probably be in the previous sign in Vedic...because as I mention, the two are almost a sign apart.

The readings do differ, and so do the philosophies behind most of the interpretations in each system.

As far as accuracy, I find I can read a Western chart but not a Vedic one, but know some Vedic astrologers who can give strikingly accurage readings. I think it is a matter of your personal perspective.

Thanks for answering that Zane. I don't know that much about the differences.....Both are very accurate for me. Seems like for either, you need to read the whole chart to get the whole picture and then they are pretty close to the same read.....

                    Thanks both for that.
that's made it very clear. to delve even further(!) what Zane, are the main difference concerning philosophies. Is it very much based on Hindi tradition, fo example. If it is based on constellations, dolthese consteelations have similar characteristics to the signs in the West?

I agree,Rae, everything has to be contextual, so this is more the sum of its parts.

Maureen, the Vedic astrology is very much rooted in the philsophies of the Indian culture. This may be one of the reasons I can't identify with it.

There are other astrologers doing what they call Sidereal astrology, which is basically Vedic but without the Eastern belief sets. I do not have as much information on their practices, but there are a number of books on the subject which you could explore.

Yes, that's a really good point.

You would need to see/read everything in context. I must admit I find Chinese astrology difficult to understand, becuase I don't know enough about the concepts behind it. For me, it's not enough just to say "i am a snake" etc, because, I know, of course, that there is far more complexity within that, like peeling an onion, in order to find a whole reading of a person's character etc. I hope I'm not being cheeky by asking if there are any websites on vedic astrology ;-)

                    You are welcome, Rae,
and yes, you do need the whole chart to really get a good picture, no matter which zodiac you use.

Otherwise, it's like going to your car repair shop and saying, "What's the matter with my car? It keeps going 'click click click" when I start the engine?" but not letting them look at the whole car. The click could be from any number of different causes...but without the whole car there, how can you tell which one?
